Mission Portland
Middle Schoolers this summer you have a unique opportunity to be a part of a very strategic mission trip. On July 13-15 we as a middle school group will be joining forces with Bridgetown Ministries to minister to the needs of some of Portland's neediest people.

Pick up an registration packet this week and begin praying and asking God if He would have you be a part of this important outreach.

The cost of the trip is only $90 and must be turned in with all registration materials by June 25.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
"Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging.

When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you." Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see."

"Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

(Mark 10:46-52)

If you were to make a list of the ten greatest Bible characters, Bartimaeus probably wouldn't make the cut. In fact, he might not even make the "Top 20." Bart hasn't gotten a lot of press over the years. After all, his entire story only takes up a few verses, right? He's a virtual nobody.

So why did God decide to include him in the Bible? I think he's there because of what he teaches us. And what would that be? Simply that when we run to Christ in need, he responds with understanding, compassion, and healing. When we are willing to do anything to get to him, he joyfully reaches out and touches us. And that touch always makes a difference--a difference you can see. A difference that makes you see life from a new perspective. It's not a difference you have to create. Not something you have to work up. It's a difference he creates in you.

Have you felt that difference?

As you sit reading, Jesus once again is passing by--this time through the words in this newsletter. This then becomes your moment--your opportunity to cry out to the Savior. Is there a blindness or some other spiritual need in your life? Where are you in the race? Do you feel like giving up? Are you hurting from the agony life can bring? Where do you need his power today? Are you willing to cry out, regardless of what the crowd might think? Or will you allow what others may say to keep you from him?

Know this: Jesus will stop and speak to you; understands everything about you. And if you call on him in faith, he is eager to heal you.

So stop begging. Listen. Get up and follow your ears. He's waiting.

By the way, when you complete your race and arrive in heaven, look for Bartimaeus. Oh, you'll have problem spotting him. He'll be the guy at the finish line, leaping and dancing like he's just won a gold medal.

. . .

Bartimaeus was determined nothing would keep him away from Jesus.

What about you? What stops you from getting close to Jesus? Is it "the crowd" that surrounds you? Where do you need his power today? Are you willing to cry out, regardless of what the crowd might think?

* Know this: If you call on Jesus, he will stop and speak to you. He is eager to heal you.

6. POTENT QUOTABLES

"God does not make clones. Each person is different,
A tribute to God's creativity.
If we are to love our neighbours as ourselves,
We must accept people as they are and not demand
that they conform to our own image."
- Henry Fehren

"God will not look you over for medals, degrees or diplomas, but for scars."
- Elbert Hubbard

A REAL-LIFE LOOK AT FAMOUS BIBLE FIGURES
We usually think of Bible characters as dressed with their Sunday best--lookin' good, smelling of accomplishment, and holding the posture of unshakeable faith. We marvel at these "flawless saints" while thinking, "Wow! I'm not worthy!"

Hey, not so fast. Believe it or not, the most celebrated people in the Bible were plagued by doubt, bad decisions, and less than perfect reputations. In a word, most were losers! And yet, God had plans that would take them beyond their humble, imperfect lives and dub them proud members of the "losers" club.

Order here.

Also available in your local Christian bookstore.
