3. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Before you read this passage, take a minute to think about how you respond to disappointment. How do you deal with tough times--times when you think, My life stinks. I'm going back to bed. Maybe I'll wake up for my senior year?

James 1:2-8, 12
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without
finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does....

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the
test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

Before you begin this meditation exercise, take some time to write down some of the tough times, tough issues, tough questions, or tough relationships that make you feel as though you'd be better off if you'd stayed in bed.

[Pause to journal.]

Now slowly read the passage two times. As you read it, take special note of the italicized words.

[Pause to read the passage.]

The words consider, know, ask, and blessed mark a path that can lead us through the thick brush and undergrowth of tough times. The first steps--perhaps unsteady and a little unsure--begin with thoughtful reflection: "Consider it pure joy." Then, with the light of what we've seen, we gain the confidence to walk with a steadier step by the light of what we know. This gives us the confidence to ask for direction in those places where the trail is hard to read--or where it's easy to read but hard to walk. Finally we come to a clearing, the place where, at least for a few steps, the journey starts to make sense ("Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial").

Read the passage one more time. This time think about the journey of your own life--uphill and downhill, good times and bad times, times of clearing and times of confusion. As you read the words, pause to listen and reflect on your walk with God. Jot down your thoughts as you listen and pray.

7. POTENT QUOTABLES

"We need the prayers of words, yes: the words are the path to contemplation; but the deepest communion with God is beyond words, on the other side of silence." - Madeleine L'Engle

"We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope." - Martin Luther King Jr.

DEVELOP A DEEPER AWARENESS OF GOD'S PRESENCE
* Deepen your experience with Scripture
* Discover the power of God's Word
* Is the Bible speaking to you?
* Learning to listen to Scripture
* Listen to what God's Word is saying to you

"Enjoy the Silence" is about the spiritual discipline of Lectio Divina. This ancient
practice can help you develop an awareness of God's presence and power found in the
Bible.

If you feel like you've been reading the Bible in the shallow end, it's time to
start scaling the cliffs and get ready to plunge headlong into the deep experience
of God's Word.
