2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
Perhaps you've heard the saying, "Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last equals true JOY." Timothy lived this kind of life. He, like Paul, was genuinely concerned about the spiritual welfare of the Christians in Philippi. They'd both learned to put their own needs aside to focus on how they could help others.
Have you learned the secret of true JOY? Are you making it a practice to keep Jesus first in your life, others second , and yourself last?
What response looks most like you?
a. I want to think of others before myself, but I usually don't.
b. Jesus is absolutely of utmost importance in my life.
c. I enjoy trying to help others and usually put my own needs on the back burner to focus on what someone else needs.
d. I want to develop this kind of genuine joy, but I'll need to totally rearrange my entire life to do so.
"But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me." (Philippians 2:25-30)
The church in Philippi had given money to Epaphroditus to deliver to Paul as a gift. While Epaphroditus was with Paul, he became very sick. When he was well enough to travel home, he returned to the Christians in Philippi and gave them this letter from Paul (the book of Philippians) as a thank-you note.
Have you ever written a thank-you note? Sometimes people write thank-you notes after they've received a Christmas or birthday gift. But think about this: The greatest gift ever given to you was given by Jesus Christ. Have you ever thanked him for the gift of eternal life he's given to you? Have you told him how grateful you are for his death on the cross?
Take time to write Christ a thank-you note right now.
