Blackberry Clean Up
Ten of us from the high school group went and attacked nearly 400 square feet of blackberries that had overtaken the backyard of an elderly couple in North Portland. It was an awesome time together, we even found a car burried under all those thorns! Most importantly we were able to share the love of Jesus to a couple of people in real need.

Letter From Oscar
As you know our sponsored child Oscar Silvestre moved beyond the reach of Compassion International so we no longer have the privilege of sponsoring him.

Last week we received a letter from him that he wrote to us before his move. He says...

Hello dear friends: It's a pleasure to greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

My family and I thank you for the present you sent me. We bought some food. I had a happy birthday along with my family.

How are you? I had winter vacation and I've already returned to school.

I'll pray for you, I want to ask you to pray for me and for my family.

Goodbye, blessings to you,
Oscar

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

IS GOD?

Our big survey revealed that 27 percent of teenagers believe there is no spiritual world at all. That would include God. The lens through which these atheists look at the world does not allow for the possibility that God is real nor that he has any influence in their world.

That's a lot of your peers who have decided to live their lives according to the idea that we are alone on earth with what our senses can reveal. On the other hand, most teenagers--and most Americans of any age--do believe in a supernatural being called God, who is the "all-powerful, all-knowing, perfect creator of the universe who rules the world today." In fact, 75 percent of students who believe in a real supernatural world have that idea of God.

Can we know for sure that God exists? Nope. That is, we can't offer complete and irrefutable evidence of God's existence that humans can experience with their senses. We can't measure God or weigh him or use night-vision goggles to pick up his body heat. By definition, God is supernatural. He's beyond our senses.

But does believing in God make sense for reasonable people if they are willing to look at the evidence? Yup. We don't have room in this book to lay out all the logical arguments for the existence of God (check out Lee Strobel's "The Case for Faith", if you really want to dig into it). But everything from the complexity and beauty of our universe to the human tendency to believe in right and wrong to the extreme reliability of the Bible points to a massively intelligent designer running the show somewhere.

Just the fact that so many people from so many walks of life believe in God is evidence that we come "pre-installed" with the idea that God is. To reject belief in God, we have to go against our programming. The biblical author Paul wrote this:

...what may be known about God is plain to them,
because God has made it plain to them. For since
the creation of the world God's invisible
qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--
have been clearly seen, being understood from
what has been made, so that men are without
excuse. (Romans 1:19-20)

Rejecting God because we can't see, touch, or taste him in person is "no excuse." In fact, Paul suggests you really have to work to throw off your natural tendency to believe in God. You have to want him not to exist. King David even wrote, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'" (Psalm 14:1).

Whether six million American teenagers believe it or not, God is "out there." But what is he like? And what, exactly, is he doing?

6. FORGETTABLE FACT

Only 1/3 of the people that can twitch their ears can twitch only one at a time.

7. POTENT QUOTABLES

"The great need today among the young is the strengthening of belief in things spiritual, for in spite of the superhuman advances in science, invention, and culture, none of this is attributed to God's gift to man; in fact, the increase of knowledge and the cult of education have but given to youth a self-reliant independence where religion has no place, and beyond admitting that Christ was 'the best man that ever lived,' there are few who concede any other tribute to the Creator. And yet the saving principles of the world are rooted in Christ, implanted in him; the Truth by which men live is the Truth as taught and lived by Jesus."
- Helen Olney

"Unbelief is actually perverted faith, for it puts its trust, not in the living God but in dying men. The unbeliever denies the self-sufficiency of God and usurps attributes that are not his. This dual sin dishonors God and ultimately destroys the soul of man."
- A. W. Tozer

"LET'S HAVE A SÉANCE TONIGHT."
