2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
LISTENING
John 13:5-11
After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered,
"Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
"Then Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and head as well!"
Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
MEDITATION
Read this passage slowly and thoughtfully. You'll see Jesus is washing the disciples' feet. We know Jesus spoke to Peter. We even know the gist of what he said. We don't know if he spoke to the other disciples or what he might have said to them.
Imagine you're in that upper room. Jesus is coming to wash your feet. What does he say to you? How do you respond? Can you feel his rough, carpenter's hands holding your feet? What do his hands feel like? How do you feel about those hands washing your feet?
Can you feel the water on your tired, dusty feet? Think about the places you've walked and what you might be carrying from your journey. Peter seemed to blurt out his words of protest, "You shall never wash my feet." What words come to your mind as you look into the face of this God-become-servant?
Write your thoughts about what might take place.

PLUNGE INTO THE DEEP EXPERIENCE OF GOD'S WORD
People talk about the power of the Bible, but sometimes Scripture just looks like normal words. However, inside these thin, innocent looking pages is the divine revelation of a God who wants you to hear him.
"Enjoy the Silence" is about the spiritual discipline of Lectio Divina. This ancient practice can help you develop an awareness of God's presence and power found in the Bible. Going Deep's simple exercises take you through the process of reading Scripture, meditating on Scripture, listening to God through Scripture, and responding to Scripture.
Order here.
Also available in your local Christian bookstore.
