2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

SURPRISE YOUR FAMILY... SERVE

When was the last time you surprised your family in a positive way? I'm sure you have examples of unpleasant surprises, but when was the last time you went out of your way to serve your family? I challenge you to look for ways to serve your family. Yep...your family! Leadership isn't just about serving people you're not related to. Serving with a ministry motive should include your family, too.

When you do your chores without being asked or place the needs of other family members before your own, you serve your family. When your parents have an exceptionally busy week and come home to a clean house, you've chosen an excellent way to serve them and relieve their stress. When the lawn gets mowed, when the driveway gets swept, when you put away the laundry, when you do anything that takes a project off your parents' to-do list, you are serving them.

You may read this and say, "I do all of these things, and my parents still complain." Let me suggest that you help out before they ask you to. Then ask occasionally if there's anything you can do to help around the house. Now, you'd better know CPR just in case their hearts stop.

If you do what you need to do before you're asked and do it with a positive attitude, eventually, you'll begin to have a positive influence on your family.

Family wounds are not easily or quickly healed. It takes persistent care and consistent, positive attitudes to develop a pattern of trust and changed character. If you want a healthy family, develop a servant's heart toward yours. Having a healthy family is worth the work and patience needed to take these steps. It's not easy, but it's important.

6. FORGETTABLE FACT

Regardless of the day of the week, Veterans Day is observed on November 11.

7. POTENT QUOTABLES

"Heaven is not here, it's There. If we were given all we wanted here, our hearts would settle for this world rather than the next. God is forever luring us up and away from this one, wooing us to Himself and His still invisible Kingdom, where we will certainly find what we so keenly long for."
- Elisabeth Elliot

"The Bible talks plentifully about joy, but it nowhere talks about a 'happy Christian.' Happiness depends on what happens; joy does not. Remember, Jesus Christ had joy, and He prays 'that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves.'"
- Oswald Chambers

LEARN TO LEAD

You are a student leader for a reason. Maybe you chose to be, maybe it was chosen for you--no matter how you got there, God has a plan to use you in ministry.

You and your youth worker know that you're new at this thing. You have leadership ability, but you're still a student--so how do you do it?

Doug Fields has been a youth pastor for a long time, and he has helped several students figure out how to be leaders in his ministry. Now, he's here to help you. You may be afraid or overwhelmed, or you may feel privileged and a little cocky--but the tools in this book will help you get the most of your time as a leader.

Order here.

Also available in your local Christian bookstore.
