Least-Popular Volunteer Positions:

4. Bullet-proof vest tester
5. Hospital bedpan emptier
6. Human crash-test dummy
Then I heard the voice of the LORD saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
Isaiah 6:8
Here's a situation that may seem familiar to you: In class, your teacher asks a question about something you forgot to study. Then she starts looking around the room for someone to answer it. You slink down in your seat, trying to make yourself invisible--praying that she won't pick you. Ever had an experience like that?
Unfortunately, many believers react the same way when it comes time to serve God. When they see a need or a service opportunity, they do everything they can to make themselves invisible, hoping that God will pick someone else to get involved.
And that's a mistake.
You see, Christian service isn't just about helping others. It's about pleasing God and drawing closer to him. The best way to strengthen your bond with your heavenly Father is through obedient acts of service. If you decline the opportunities he gives you to serve him, you're the one who will lose in the long run.
The good news is that God gives second chances. Right now, he may be looking for someone to explain forgiveness to a student at school who's struggling with guilt. He may be looking for someone to start a winter coat collection for the homeless people in your community. He may be looking for someone to share his love by hanging out with the guy at church who no one can stand.
Will you be that person? Will you step up to the plate like Isaiah did and say, "Here am I--send me"? Don't let excuses like busyness or inexperience stand in your way. Few people have enough free time to get involved in service projects. People who are serious about service make time. And most people who volunteer for service work have no idea what they're doing. However, they learn very quickly that when God calls someone, he also equips that person. He will not let a small matter such as lack of experience stand in the way of his work being done.
So what are you waiting for? It's time to volunteer!

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
Ephesians 4:29
If all the words you said last week were written down, would they show that you didn't let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what builds others up? That's a pretty tough command to keep--especially when you're with your friends. Though it's hard, you've still got to do your best to obey. Makes you want to yell for help, doesn't it?
Well, if the apostle Paul wrote an advice column--like Dear Abby or Dr. Laura--on how to use your words when you're with your friends, it might read something like this:
Today's column features Dr. Paul's handy-dandy list of do's and don'ts for talking to your friends:
* Do speak the truth. Be honest and real.
* Don't deceive others and pretend to be something or someone you're not.
* Do get rid of slander. As the saying goes, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
* Don't use obscenity, foolish talk, or coarse jokes. If you're not sure what that means, follow this rule of thumb: If you can't say it to your pastor, you probably shouldn't say it to your friends.
* Do speak to each other about the stuff that really matters. Talk about God and the good things he's done in your life.
* Don't let unwholesome words come out of your mouth. Never tear others down, even in "fun." Saying "she knows I'm only kidding" doesn't make it any less hurtful. Resist the temptation to make yourself look better by pointing out someone else's faults.
* Do say things that will build others up and benefit those who listen to you. Go out of your way to say encouraging things about others and to others. Rely on God for the strength to use the power of your words to make a positive difference in the lives of your friends!
Check out more of "Dr. Paul's advice" on both your actions and words in Ephesians 4:22-5:20
If you'd like, pray this prayer:
"God, I want to pay more attention to my words. Help me use my words to help others instead of hurt them..."

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. [Romans 6:9-11]
It's easy for this all to seem confusing. Don't let people tell you they have it all figured out because the process is a journey that doesn't end. There is a difference between getting a life from God and getting a life of God. God has already given you a life. What you do with it and how you use it is entirely up to you. (Choice is another gift, but that's another talk...) Having the life of God begins when the Holy Spirit comes in to stay. The challenge is to make room for him. Our job is to look at our lives and say, "What am I willing to let go of?" "What is keeping me from a closer relationship with God?" Perhaps it is anger or bitterness toward someone in our past. Perhaps it is anger at ourselves. We hang on to so many things we don't need, but as this journey continues we must make room for the spirit of God in order to have that life of God.
[OZ (Oswald Chambers) says:]
The weakest saint can experience the power of the Deity of the Son of God if once he is willing to "let go." Any strand of our own energy will blur the life of Jesus. We have to keep letting go, and slowly and surely the great full life of God will invade us in every part, and men will take knowledge of us that we have been with Jesus.
Just between you and God: Prayer is just that... between you and God... so what you say to him and what you give to him stays between the two of you. Dig something out of your soul that you have been carrying around for too long. Give it to him. He will fill the space it leaves with his love. For real.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. (Philippians 2:5-7)
If anyone had the right to pull rank rank, be first in line, or demand his own way, it was Jesus. After all, he came from the greatest kingdom that exists and willingly chose to live in our world and walk our dirt roads. He's the King!
But instead of demanding his rights or pushing for his own way way, he became a servant to humanity. He served us! Check out John 13:4-5. What did Jesus do in this particular situation to serve his disciples?
Think of several ways you can be a servant. I'll give you a few suggestions, then you can spend some time brainstorming a few more.
1. I can surprise my parents by cleaning the entire house.
2. I can rake the leaves in my neighbor's yard--for free!
3. I can visit an elderly member of our church who's now a shut-in and can no longer come to services.
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death--even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:8)
It's easy for us to get caught up with our rights, isn't it? We see television commercials with lawyers telling us how to sue for damage that's been done to us, or for money that's owed to us for being inconvenienced. Maybe you've caught yourself thinking, Hey, he had no right to say that to me! Or That's not fair! I've got my rights!
It certainly wasn't fair that Jesus was tried as a criminal and crucified. He was completely innocent! Talk about rights. He could have commanded a bazillion angels to rescue him from the cross, but he chose instead to be obedient to the will of the Father. He chose to pay our death penalty for sin so we wouldn't have to!
Take a few minutes to write out a prayer of gratitude to Jesus, who didn't demand his royal rights, but instead loves you so much that he took your place on the cross.
