3. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Before you read this passage, take a minute to think about how you respond to disappointment. How do you deal with tough times--times when you think, My life stinks. I'm going back to bed. Maybe I'll wake up for my senior year?

James 1:2-8, 12
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without
finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does....

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the
test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

Before you begin this meditation exercise, take some time to write down some of the tough times, tough issues, tough questions, or tough relationships that make you feel as though you'd be better off if you'd stayed in bed.

[Pause to journal.]

Now slowly read the passage two times. As you read it, take special note of the italicized words.

[Pause to read the passage.]

The words consider, know, ask, and blessed mark a path that can lead us through the thick brush and undergrowth of tough times. The first steps--perhaps unsteady and a little unsure--begin with thoughtful reflection: "Consider it pure joy." Then, with the light of what we've seen, we gain the confidence to walk with a steadier step by the light of what we know. This gives us the confidence to ask for direction in those places where the trail is hard to read--or where it's easy to read but hard to walk. Finally we come to a clearing, the place where, at least for a few steps, the journey starts to make sense ("Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial").

Read the passage one more time. This time think about the journey of your own life--uphill and downhill, good times and bad times, times of clearing and times of confusion. As you read the words, pause to listen and reflect on your walk with God. Jot down your thoughts as you listen and pray.

3. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Okay, I know this doesn't come as any big surprise, but it's worth mentioning anyway. It's also worth remembering next time your parents don't do the right thing or say the right thing or can't even figure out what the right thing is. Sometimes they blow it. They make mistakes. After all, they don't really know what they're doing. Professional parents just don't exist. Parents are on-the-job learners, and they frequently make mistakes. They probably won't admit this to you, but it's true.

When you were born, you didn't come with an instruction manual. Sure, parenting books can help (your folks probably have a few of them), but not one of them contains information on how to parent you. That's because before you were born, no one like you ever existed on the face of the earth. God created you with your own blend of personality traits, gifts, talents, abilities, and special needs that nobody else ever had. And as every retired parent knows, what works with one child doesn't always work with another. So whether you were your parents' first child or their fifteenth, they still had to figure out how to parent you.

And you know what? They're still at it. That's because as you get older, you continue to change. Every day your parents have to figure out how to be good parents for you based on who you are and who you're becoming. Some teenagers require more discipline and control, and others require less. Some need more love and attention while others need less. There's no science to this--it has to be done by trial and error. That's why parents sometimes make mistakes.

I know I made my share of mistakes as a parent. I said no to my kids when I should have said yes. I said yes when I should have said no. I didn't listen to them when I should have, and I didn't talk to them when I should have. Sometimes I was too strict. Other times I was too lenient. The problem with being a parent is you really don't know what you're doing until after you've done it. Even then, it takes a few years to realize what you did wrong or did right.

Don't hold your parents to a standard of perfection you can't even keep yourself. They do the best they can. You should realize that you have a lot to do with how successful your parents are. You can help them not make so many mistakes. If you can make life easier for them, there's a pretty good chance life will be easier for you. As I said earlier, parents generally learn how to parent from their kids. Parents with problem kids seem to be problem parents. Parents with good kids seem to be good parents. See, you have a lot more power to impact your family than you may realize.

Parents aren't perfect, of course. They won't always do the right thing. Your parents may disappoint you from time to time, and you'll wonder why they can't be more consistent, more reasonable, more trustworthy, or more like the parents of somebody else you know. But parent envy only makes things worse. Your parents are human, and they're probably the only parents you'll ever get. In their own inept way, they're doing the best they can. They need your understanding, forgiveness, cooperation, and love--in spite of all their mistakes.

"Family life is full of major and minor crises -- the ups and downs of health, success and failure in career, marriage, and divorce -- and all kinds of characters. 2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
"Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging.

When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you." Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see."

"Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

(Mark 10:46-52)

If you were to make a list of the ten greatest Bible characters, Bartimaeus probably wouldn't make the cut. In fact, he might not even make the "Top 20." Bart hasn't gotten a lot of press over the years. After all, his entire story only takes up a few verses, right? He's a virtual nobody.

So why did God decide to include him in the Bible? I think he's there because of what he teaches us. And what would that be? Simply that when we run to Christ in need, he responds with understanding, compassion, and healing. When we are willing to do anything to get to him, he joyfully reaches out and touches us. And that touch always makes a difference--a difference you can see. A difference that makes you see life from a new perspective. It's not a difference you have to create. Not something you have to work up. It's a difference he creates in you.

Have you felt that difference?

As you sit reading, Jesus once again is passing by--this time through the words in this newsletter. This then becomes your moment--your opportunity to cry out to the Savior. Is there a blindness or some other spiritual need in your life? Where are you in the race? Do you feel like giving up? Are you hurting from the agony life can bring? Where do you need his power today? Are you willing to cry out, regardless of what the crowd might think? Or will you allow what others may say to keep you from him?

Know this: Jesus will stop and speak to you; understands everything about you. And if you call on him in faith, he is eager to heal you.

So stop begging. Listen. Get up and follow your ears. He's waiting.

By the way, when you complete your race and arrive in heaven, look for Bartimaeus. Oh, you'll have problem spotting him. He'll be the guy at the finish line, leaping and dancing like he's just won a gold medal.

. . .

Bartimaeus was determined nothing would keep him away from Jesus.

What about you? What stops you from getting close to Jesus? Is it "the crowd" that surrounds you? Where do you need his power today? Are you willing to cry out, regardless of what the crowd might think?

* Know this: If you call on Jesus, he will stop and speak to you. He is eager to heal you.

A REAL-LIFE LOOK AT FAMOUS BIBLE FIGURES
We usually think of Bible characters as dressed with their Sunday best--lookin' good, smelling of accomplishment, and holding the posture of unshakeable faith. We marvel at these "flawless saints" while thinking, "Wow! I'm not worthy!"

Hey, not so fast. Believe it or not, the most celebrated people in the Bible were plagued by doubt, bad decisions, and less than perfect reputations. In a word, most were losers! And yet, God had plans that would take them beyond their humble, imperfect lives and dub them proud members of the "losers" club.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Perhaps you've heard the saying, "Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last equals true JOY." Timothy lived this kind of life. He, like Paul, was genuinely concerned about the spiritual welfare of the Christians in Philippi. They'd both learned to put their own needs aside to focus on how they could help others.

Have you learned the secret of true JOY? Are you making it a practice to keep Jesus first in your life, others second , and yourself last?

What response looks most like you?

a. I want to think of others before myself, but I usually don't.

b. Jesus is absolutely of utmost importance in my life.

c. I enjoy trying to help others and usually put my own needs on the back burner to focus on what someone else needs.

d. I want to develop this kind of genuine joy, but I'll need to totally rearrange my entire life to do so.

"But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me." (Philippians 2:25-30)

The church in Philippi had given money to Epaphroditus to deliver to Paul as a gift. While Epaphroditus was with Paul, he became very sick. When he was well enough to travel home, he returned to the Christians in Philippi and gave them this letter from Paul (the book of Philippians) as a thank-you note.

Have you ever written a thank-you note? Sometimes people write thank-you notes after they've received a Christmas or birthday gift. But think about this: The greatest gift ever given to you was given by Jesus Christ. Have you ever thanked him for the gift of eternal life he's given to you? Have you told him how grateful you are for his death on the cross?

Take time to write Christ a thank-you note right now.
