UNLIKELY HEROES

TOPIC: God uses the weak and lowly

MAIN SCRIPTURES: "In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?" (James 2:25)

"The people I treasure most are the humble--they depend only on me and tremble when I speak." (Isaiah 66:2, CEV)

OTHER SCRIPTURES: Joshua 2; Joshua 6:17; Matthew 5:1-10; 1 Corinthians 1:27

WHAT JESUS MIGHT SAY TO YOU:
Today I want to talk about your feelings of inadequacy. It's a lie that you're not good enough to follow me or represent me to the world. I know the world prizes the strong and successful. My way is different. I look for those with humble hearts, aware of their weaknesses. Those who give me room to work in them and through them. These are the people I want to use. Have you read the story of my servant Rahab in Joshua 2? Go ahead. Read it.

I chose to use Rahab in a mighty way. Why? Was it because she was popular and well-respected? No, quite the opposite. In fact, Rahab was a prostitute. But I chose her. And not only did she change the world, but she also had a profound experience of my grace and mercy in the process.

Fast-forward a few years. Rahab had a son named Boaz. Boaz is considered one of the greatest examples of grace and mercy in history. (Check out the book of Ruth.) How did Boaz learn to be so godly and merciful? It was from his mother, the former prostitute.

Remember David--the humble shepherd boy who became a great king, a king after my own heart? He was also a descendant of Rahab and Boaz. Furthermore, guess who else descended from Rahab? I did.

I would rather change the world through a humble prostitute or shepherd boy than through a prideful, religious person who thinks he has it all together. I can't use those who think they have no need for me.

Are you imperfect? Messed up? Do you need me? If the answer is yes, you're in good shape. I can use you. I want to use you to change the world...and I will.

Going against the flow, Jesus

SUMMARY CHALLENGE: No matter who you are or where you've been, God wants to use you.

MS Turkey 'N Thanks

This last Saturday evening we as a Middle School group gathered for our annual TNT. We enjoyed an amazing Thanksgiving style feast (Thank you Gloria!), great times of fellowship, cool discussion on what Thanksgiving is all about, and some great worship. Always a good time! We have much to be thankful for.

See all the pictures here.

NO MIDWEEK MEETINGS THIS WEEK

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday there will be no High School gathering on Wednesday or Middle School gathering on Thursday. Enjoy the holiday and we'll see you next week.

SCENE AROUND 180

Last week we asked you to send us photos of people and events that you have captured either on your camera of cell phone. We received one of one of our favorite people. You're going to need that hood Regina when that cold Kansas winter arrives! We sure miss you you and Tim. You are in our prayers.

Thanks for the photo Zach Munger.

PHOTO IN NEED OF A CAPTION

Speaking of photos. There is one that was captured on Saturday night at our MS TNT that is just begging for a good caption. We will award a great big handful of candy to the person who can most creatively caption this photo. The winner will be announced in next week's newsletter.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

LISTENING

1 Samuel 7:5-13

5 Then Samuel said, "Assemble all Israel at Mizpah and I will intercede with the Lord for you."
6 When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, "We have sinned against the Lord." And Samuel was leader of Israel at Mizpah.
7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. And when the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines.
8 They said to Samuel, "Do not stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines."
9 Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it up as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel's behalf, and the Lord answered him.
10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.
11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Car.
12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far has the Lord helped us."
13 So the Philistines were subdued and did not invade Israelite territory again. Throughout Samuel's lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines.

MEDITATION

In the Old Testament, the Israelites sometimes placed a large stone or built a monument to mark where God had done a great work. Those monuments helped them remember God is faithful. The monuments were often given names, as in this story, where Samuel names the spot Ebenezer, which means literally "stone of help."

Think of the moments when God has done great works in your life. In what ways do these experiences serve as monuments to remind you of God's ongoing work in your life?

Think about one of these moments. Did it occur on a retreat or at a camp? Perhaps at a worship service? Did it happen at a really good place in your life? Or did it happen during a really hard time? Name that moment and ponder it for a while.

As you look back at your "Ebenezer" moment, consider what you learned about God in that place. In what ways did God help you in that time? If there were a plaque with an inscription on that monument, what would it say?

In your time of reflection, take that moment and set it up before God as a stone that marks his presence in your life saying, "Thus far has the Lord helped me."

DIVE INTO GOD'S WORD

People talk about the power of the Bible, but sometimes Scripture just looks like normal words. However, inside these thin, innocent looking pages is the divine revelation of a God who wants you to hear him.

"Enjoy the Silence" is about the spiritual discipline of Lectio Divina. This ancient practice can help you develop an awareness of God's presence and power found in the Bible. Going Deep's simple exercises take you through the process of reading Scripture, meditating on Scripture, listening to God through Scripture, and responding to Scripture.

If you feel like you've been reading the Bible in the shallow end, it's time to start scaling the cliffs and get ready to plunge headlong into the deep experience of God's Word.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

SURPRISE YOUR FAMILY... SERVE

When was the last time you surprised your family in a positive way? I'm sure you have examples of unpleasant surprises, but when was the last time you went out of your way to serve your family? I challenge you to look for ways to serve your family. Yep...your family! Leadership isn't just about serving people you're not related to. Serving with a ministry motive should include your family, too.

When you do your chores without being asked or place the needs of other family members before your own, you serve your family. When your parents have an exceptionally busy week and come home to a clean house, you've chosen an excellent way to serve them and relieve their stress. When the lawn gets mowed, when the driveway gets swept, when you put away the laundry, when you do anything that takes a project off your parents' to-do list, you are serving them.

You may read this and say, "I do all of these things, and my parents still complain." Let me suggest that you help out before they ask you to. Then ask occasionally if there's anything you can do to help around the house. Now, you'd better know CPR just in case their hearts stop.

If you do what you need to do before you're asked and do it with a positive attitude, eventually, you'll begin to have a positive influence on your family.

Family wounds are not easily or quickly healed. It takes persistent care and consistent, positive attitudes to develop a pattern of trust and changed character. If you want a healthy family, develop a servant's heart toward yours. Having a healthy family is worth the work and patience needed to take these steps. It's not easy, but it's important.

- Elisabeth Elliot

"The Bible talks plentifully about joy, but it nowhere talks about a 'happy Christian.' Happiness depends on what happens; joy does not. Remember, Jesus Christ had joy, and He prays 'that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves.'"

LEARN TO LEAD

You are a student leader for a reason. Maybe you chose to be, maybe it was chosen for you--no matter how you got there, God has a plan to use you in ministry.

You and your youth worker know that you're new at this thing. You have leadership ability, but you're still a student--so how do you do it?

Doug Fields has been a youth pastor for a long time, and he has helped several students figure out how to be leaders in his ministry. Now, he's here to help you. BITE #10

Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. (Colossians 1:24)

Paul tells the Colossians that he rejoices in the fact that Christ suffered and died for them. You, too, can rejoice and celebrate the fact that Christ suffered and died for your family and friends. We're grateful for Christ's death, but we also celebrate his resurrection from the dead! He's alive right now! He didn't simply die for your sins; he rose and lives to empower you to live the holy life he calls you to live!

Paul also tells his friends in Colosse that he, too, will suffer in spreading the gospel. Christ never promised us that being a Christian would be easy. When we take the gospel to the world around us, we're unable to avoid suffering.

What are some of the things you find toughest about sharing your faith with others? Which types of suffering have you experienced because of you determination to share the gospel with others? (check all that apply)

___ A. People have made fun of me.
___ B. I've been physically abused.
___ C. I've been jailed.
___ D. People have told lies about me.
___ E. I've been falsely accused.
___ F. I've been sent to the principal's office.
___ G. I've been given detention.
___ H. I've been verbally abused.
___ I. I've been laughed at.
___ J. People have talked behind my back.
___ K. Some people refuse to be my friends.

Take a moment to stop and pray for missionaries--those who have committed their lives to spreading the gospel in other countries. Many of them face daily persecution. Ask God to empower them and guide their steps.

Now take a moment to write out a prayer for Christians living in countries who oppose Christianity. Many of these Christians are taken from their families, beaten, jailed, or even killed. Ask God to strengthen and comfort them. Pray for the persecution to cease.
