2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
CHRISTIANS STILL GROAN, AND PART OF US STILL FEELS EMPTY, BECAUSE WE'RE NOT WITH GOD YET.
Imagine those words in giant neon letters. Let them leap off the page and burrow to the center of your brain. They're that important.
You see, too many believers have fallen for a terrible, terrible lie. We convince ourselves--or allow ourselves to be convinced--that becoming a Christian will automatically take away all of our emptiness. Some of us actually believe that Christians should never feel the groaning or emptiness Solomon was trying to escape.
But that's not the way it works. Perhaps the most famous Christian of all time wrote these words in Romans 8:22-24:
We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains
of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we
ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as
we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our
bodies. For in this hope we were saved.
The apostle Paul felt the painful groaning to be with God in person--after he became a Christian. After the Holy Spirit came into his life. In fact, here's a little secret: The emptiness and longing we feel for God might actually get worse for believers the longer we follow Jesus.
That news may be unsettling for some Christians. The emptiness they feel may cause them to believe they're doing something wrong. They may tell themselves if they read their Bible more often...or pray more intently...or develop a purer thought life, their emptiness will disappear. But it won't happen. Those occasional pangs of emptiness and longing won't disappear until we reach our eternal home.

BREAKING FREE
Breath of Life, breathe on me...
Wind of God, blow through me...
Spirit of Truth, rebirth me...
pull back the covers of my practical, logical world
and baptize my knowledge with the mystery of faith.
help me to believe and to stop trying to understand.
after all, how could I ever wrap my mind around something--
someone--
greater than the universe itself?
your presence doesn't make me comfortable,
but it comforts me.
your light isn't easy to look at,
but it reveals me.
the spiritual life is an absurd mystery.
help me to enter it,
as it enters me.
the first step isn't one of reason, but one of faith.
help me to take it. even now. even here. today.
amen.

BRIDGETOWN NEEDS TOYS
Bridgetown Ministries has a big need for toys this week. They will be conducting a children's outreach this Saturday and had planned to receive toys from KGW's Toy Drive to give to the children. They just received word that the KGW toys will not be available until after the outreach.
We have been asked if we would be willing to help out. Would you be willing to purchase a new toy for a needy child this week? If you could purchase a new toy, wrap it up, and then label it either boy or girl, and the age it is appropriate for, it would be greatly appreciated! All toys will need to be delivered to the church no later than Thursday morning. Please email Pastor Brian if you have any questions.
SCENE AROUND 180
Mitch Thornburg was caught last week at the 180 Cafe having a hard time deciding what to get. It's all so good!

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
DEATHBED DOUBTS
I have a confession to make. Please don't hate me for this--I'm just being honest with you. I hope you don't get upset, but I'm willing to take that risk. So here's my confession...
...Christians bug me.
Oh, not all Christians. Just the ones who give the rest of us a bad name. To be honest, I really don't like some Christians. For example, I don't much like those "Christians" who talk one way and live another--"hypocrites," they're called. Then there are the rigid rule-keepers, those who are so concerned with telling the rest of us what we shouldn't do that they've lost the beauty of Christianity. They've forgotten what makes our faith so attractive and irresistible to others.
There's one more segment of the Christian population that really gets under my skin. It's those well-meaning folks so obsessed with making converts that they end up "overselling the product." They promise things the Gospel doesn't. Often, they talk about the right things--happiness, peace, power for living, forgiveness, abundant life, and fulfillment--but in a way that misleads people. For example, while God does forgive you when you become a Christian, that doesn't mean everyone else will. God forgets your sinful past, but you may still suffer some consequences of it. Yes, you now have abundant life, but that doesn't mean you won't have any more problems. And I think Christians who go around telling others that God will take away all their problems sometimes do more harm than good.
Bottom line: Giving your heart to God will improve your life, giving you purpose here and preparation for the hereafter. But you may experience some opposition, hardship, and even persecution. In other words, it won't always be fun. That's what some Christians forget to say when they're witnessing.
For 2,000 years it's been hard to be a Christian. There's been more persecution than prosperity. More hardship than health. More ridicule than riches. Even today, following Christ can mean life is difficult, awkward, embarrassing, and sometimes downright unpleasant. That's because often there's conflict between our faith and our world. When you experience pain and problems--when it's not fun to be a disciple of Jesus--you may start rethinking your faith. That's when the doubts and questions come.
Being a Christian doesn't mean life always goes your way. You and I aren't protected from life's potholes. We're not exempt from suffering, sickness, and death. We don't always get delivered from flat tires and failed tests and other trials that are pretty trivial. We also aren't exempt from car wrecks, family conflicts, financial struggles, and failure. Unexpected hardships show up at your door, rattling your belief system, causing you to question even the most basic elements of your faith.
When this happens, you have two options: 1) chuck your beliefs like a used candy wrapper, or 2) start wrestling with the "uncomfortableness" of your faith. It doesn't matter what church you attend, what Bible translation you use, or how godly your parents are. Somewhere along the way God will fail to meet your expectations. When that happens, it's time to look for some answers.
