2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

GOD'S MOTIVE—LOVE

"And so we know and rely on the love god has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in god, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." (1 John 4:16-18)

The parable of the Good Samaritan is a good indication of how Jesus wants his followers to love people—even if we have very little in common with those people. In John 4:1-26 Jesus has an encounter that indicates just how deep our love should flow.

While in a Samaritan town called Sychar, Jesus stopped at a well where a local woman was drawing water. "Will you give me a drink?" he asked her.

The woman was shocked. The idea of a Jewish man talking to a Samaritan woman was so culturally out of bounds, she barely knew what to say. Here's how the conversation played out, according to Scripture:

The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?"

Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"

Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."

He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."

"I have no husband," she replied.

Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."

This is a life-changing story, not just for the Samaritan woman but for all followers of Jesus. In it Jesus shows us how to love unloved people.

*One fell swoop to abolish racism*
Notice that Jesus took a walk through Samaria, something Jews never did because of violent separatism in the culture. As mentioned in chapter one, Samaritans were half-blooded people. The Assyrian invaders who had occupied Israel took wives and began producing mixed-race children. In response the Jews ostracized the half-breeds, believing they were only half-pure before God.

When Jesus took time out of his day to sit with someone of such an "impure" lineage, he brought attention to the absurdity of racism. When Jesus looked at people, he didn't see skin color or nationality or ethnic background. He saw their need for love. Check the New Testament, and you'll find that Jesus gave his time to all groups of people.

*One fell swoop to affirm women*
Jesus showed men how to love women, not in a sexual way but in a spiritual way—a practical way. In the New Testament culture of the Middle East, women were considered to be little more than servants to men. Jesus, by sitting and talking with a Samaritan woman, began validating women as equals of men.

His attitude was nothing short of revolutionary. From his friendship with Mary and Martha to his healing of Peter's mother-in-law to his first post-resurrection appearance, Jesus left no doubt that women were a central part of his ministry—and key figures in spreading his gospel.

*One fell swoop to advocate forgiveness*
The woman Jesus approached had been married five times. What's more, she was living with a man who wasn't her husband at all. Jesus certainly knew about her sin of adultery, but it didn't stop his relentless pursuit to help her in times of need. Jesus didn't judge her before she had the ability to choose truth. He saw her need and helped her reach the object of her desire.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Every now and then, the Bible will use some word-pictures or sayings to help us get a clearer picture of the truth God wants us to understand. They really do make a lot of sense, but sometimes at first glance, it's tough to figure out what they mean.

Here's one example: "You are the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13). Huh? What does that mean? Well, let's think about it: What do we know about salt? It's a mineral that adds flavor to things. Something bland like mashed potatoes suddenly becomes a bonanza of flavor for your taste buds when you add salt. Chances are, you like salted peanuts better than unsalted. How tasty would potato chips be without salt? Let's face it: Without salt the experience of eating would be a lot less exciting.

God wants his followers to be like salt. He wants us to be his seasoning to add flavor and excitement to the world around us. When we're added to the scene, things should be tastier (that's kinda weird, but you get the point). As Christ-followers, we should add some flavor to the world. The idea that church and Christianity are boring really doesn't make sense. God wants people to get a taste of the life he offers...a salty taste that leaves them wanting a little more.

The Bible also calls us "the light of the world" (verse 14). In a real way, people who don't know God are lost...kind of like when you're in the dark and can't find your way around. God wants us to shine brightly to our friends and family who don't know him.

When God's kids are salty, they add flavor to the world. When they let their light shine, they let others see God more clearly through them.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Who Is God?
You probably believe in God; most people do. But even though most people believe in God, there's a good chance they don't really know who he is.

All through history, people have worshiped all sorts of gods. Many times they would create gods that fit what was happening in their lives. They might have had a god of the hunt to help out when they went hunting or a god of battle to help them when they fought a war. Not a bad idea...I could have used a "god of the kiss" to help out when I kissed a girl for the first time, but that's an entirely different story.

Although a custom-made god for various situations may seem pretty cool, it's not the way it is. The Bible makes it clear that there is one true God. Yep, one God who spoke the heavens into existence, created people out of dirt, and holds the world in his hand.

In the Bible, God says he is the "First and the Last...the Beginning and the End" (Revelation 22:13). In other words, God has always been and will always be...there is no beginning or end to God because, well, because he is the beginning and the end! Wow, think about that for a second...but not too long, or else your brain will start to hurt.

Here are a few other cool things about God: God knows everything, is everywhere at one time, is all-powerful, and is the source of all creation. But here's the best part: God wants a relationship with you and has a plan for your life! Imagine that...the all-knowing, all-powerful, everywhere-at-once God knows you and hopes you'll want to know him. How do you get to know God? By reading the Bible, by getting to know Jesus (Jesus is God in human form...God in a bod!), by talking to God in prayer, and stuff like that.

It takes faith to believe in the one true God. It isn't always a popular route to take. But even though we'll never know and understand everything about him, we can know that he's ready, willing, and able to be a part of our lives!

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

All through the Bible we read about people who missed out on things that could have been the most amazing experiences of their lives:

* The disciples who sat in the boat watching while Peter jumped out and walked on the water toward Jesus.

* The Hebrew fighting men who wouldn't battle Goliath and instead watched as a little kid named David killed him.

* Demas, Paul's disciple, who left Paul because his priorities were all jacked.

And so many more!

Here's the question you need to ask yourself: What kind of life do I want to have? And if your choices are A) an amazing life full of excitement, adventure, meaning, and satisfaction, or B) a wimpy, boring, super-dull life that's pretty much a waste of oxygen, uh, we're confident you'd pick the first one. Please...you did, right? Okay, good.

Here's how it works: The only way to really experience the best life (that doesn't mean the easiest life, by the way), is to live completely for Jesus. Remember--Jesus invented us! Since he knows us better than anyone else--even better than we know ourselves--he's the only one who really knows what "the best life" really looks like for us.

So if you play it safe and only look out for yourself, or if you don't trust God and live the way he tells us to live, you're robbing yourself of the best life possible. And that's pretty stupid, isn't it?

Here's a faith survival tip: Don't just play around at being a Jesus-follower. Choose to be courageous in living the life Jesus wants for you!

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

LISTENING

John 13:1-5, 23
It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.... One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.

MEDITATION

Imagine you're present at the Last Supper. The meal is over, and Jesus leans back to recline near the table, as was the custom of that time. He's among his disciples, people with whom he's shared three powerful, challenging years. They've all been through much together. Yet Jesus knows much is still yet to come. Imagine what the scene must have looked like.

Now imagine Jesus asks you to join him. What are you feeling as he calls you to him? Are you thrilled? Nervous? Fearful? Contented? Do you feel safe or vulnerable--or perhaps a combination of both? Pay attention to your response and your emotions. Take a moment to figure them out. Then imagine Jesus invites you to lay your head on his chest. He's inviting you to listen to the very heartbeat of God. What's your response? As you listen, what do you hear?
[Spend about 15-20 minutes in silence.]

IS THE BIBLE SPEAKING TO YOU?

People talk about the power of the Bible, but sometimes Scripture just looks like normal words. However, inside these thin, innocent looking pages is the divine revelation of a God who wants you to hear him.

"Enjoy the Silence" is about the spiritual discipline of Lectio Divina. This ancient practice can help you develop an awareness of God's presence and power found in the Bible. Going Deep's simple exercises take you through the process of reading Scripture, meditating on Scripture, listening to God through Scripture, and responding to Scripture.

If you feel like you've been reading the Bible in the shallow end, it's time to start scaling the cliffs and get ready to plunge headlong into the deep experience of God's Word.
