2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.

A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"

The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."

Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

Luke 10:30-37.

Though the details of this story are rooted in first-century life in the Middle East, the principle transcends time periods. We Christians need to ask ourselves, "Who are the 'young travelers' of today? Who are the 'priests'? Who are the 'Levites'? And most important, who are the Samaritans'?"

Everyone travels this long dusty road called life, none of us knowing when evil or misfortune will jump out from behind a rock to batter us into a ditch. Depending on the circumstances, the ditch may be a physical problem, a financial crisis, an emotional breakdown, a spiritual funk, or whatever epic battle life may orchestrate.

After having talked with hundreds of teenagers from all over the world, I can attest to you today that the ditch is a real place where people lie, longing for someone to notice and help them. In the teenage years the ditch may take the form of depression, an identity crisis, or a traumatic relationship with a mother or a father. In the adult years it may take the form of homelessness, prostitution, addiction, or homosexuality. Whatever the case, such issues can keep unsuspecting travelers down for a long time.

Obviously, a lot of people are lying in ditches, waiting for someone to help. The question is, which passerby will you be when you see someone in a ditch?

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

*Topic:*
When you don't think there's enough provision (money)

*Main Scripture:*
...for I have learned how to get along happily whether I have much or little. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strength I need." (Philippians 4:11-13, NLT)

*Other Scriptures:*
Matthew 6:24-34; Luke 12:15-21; 1 Timothy 6:6-10

*What Might Jesus Say to You?:*
How much money do you need to be happy? Most people tell me it's just a little more than they have right now. The world you live in is filled with pressure to buy, buy, buy. Advertisers try to keep you feeling dissatisfied with what you have and hungry to purchase more of the stuff they push at you. So you continue buying to keep up with what everyone else has. It's a clever trap. The more you get, the less satisfied you are with what you own.

I'm sure you want a job if you don't have one already. You want power and independence so you don't have to feel like you're begging money from your parents. But you can get so wrapped up in earning and spending money that you forget about me. Your work hours may leave you so tired that you can't find time to spend with me--to worship, read my Word, or pray anything beyond quick cries for help.

Break out of the money trap. Put me first. Find your happiness and fulfillment in relationships, not possessions.

People have always been worried about money and stuff. Don't be like the people who ignore God. They take pride in superficial things. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well what you need, and he will give it to you as you give him first place in your life. Don't be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of you.

Your fulfillment,
Jesus

*Summary Challenge:*
"No one can serve two masters...You cannot serve both God and Money." (Matthew 6:24)

*Take some time to Journal*

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

Jeremiah 20:7-13

O Lord, you deceived me, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long; everyone mocks me.

Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long.

But if I say, "I will not mention him or speak any more in his name," his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

I hear many whispering, "Terror on every side! Report him! Let's report him!" All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, "Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him."

But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten.

O Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you I have committed my cause.

Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.

*Meditation*
Begin by reading this passage slowly three times. Then sit quietly for a few minutes. Before you read anything else, quietly ponder these words: "O Lord, you deceived me, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed."

[Pause to read.]

The New Jerusalem Bible translates verse 7 this way: "O Lord, Thou hast seduced me and I was seduced; Thou hast overcome me and prevailed." It's one of those verses you have to read twice. After all, it's not every day you read "Thou" and "seduced" in the same sentence! But, in fact, "seduced" is probably closer to what Jeremiah was feeling.

It's like Jeremiah is saying, "I was deceived. I was seduced. I didn't bargain for all this when I responded to the call of God." But then, the more he experienced the intensity of God's passionate love, the more he was drawn to it, the more he was captivated by it, the more it began to beat with intensity in his own heart.

But that passionate love comes with a cost. It did for Jeremiah and it likely will for us. Consider some of the following comments:

* "I've become a laughingstock."

* "Everyone mocks me."

* "People think I'm some kind of weird religious freak."

* "My friends want to know why I'm not sleeping with my boyfriend/girlfriend."

* "People think I'm stupid, because I wasn't willing to cheat on the test."

* "People don't get it when I invite them to church with me."

Have you, as a Christian, ever felt that sense of "Oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into?"

Stop for a moment as you ponder that question. Allow God to meet you in the midst of your feelings, even if they are feelings of deception and betrayal.

Imagine God holding those feelings in his hands. Imagine yourself holding in your heart the intensity of his love (like a "fire shut up in my bones," as Jeremiah put it). You may want to stop to write down some of what you're feeling.

[Pause to journal.]

In spite of his frustration with God, Jeremiah writes "the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior." The great news in all of this is that God is with you in the midst of the craziness. He will not lead you where he will not go. You will not speak by yourself. You will not go alone. This is not a God who "loves 'em and leaves 'em." You may have been seduced, but you have not been deceived.

God is there with you all the time.

God is there with you.

God is there.

God is.

Take a few moments to savor this truth by closing your eyes and meditating on the phrase, "The Lord is with me like a mighty warrior."

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

In the nineteenth century, the little village of Clapham in England was home to a group of friends who tackled the tough issues of their day. Their opponents called them the "Clapham Sect"—and the name stuck. Many of these friends were ministers or politicians, and one was a playwright. Each person had different strengths and skills, which made for a pretty powerful community.

Clapham was beautiful and peaceful—the kind of place you might go to get away from the craziness of life. But things weren't always tranquil in Clapham. As a matter of fact, when certain issues came up, things could get very tense! Members of the sect often discussed the key political ideas of the day. When they disagreed with one another, they debated. But when they agreed, they went out and fought for change together.

One issue they agreed on was the abolition of the slave trade. Members of the sect often met together in the home of William Wilberforce or Henry Thornton—two of their leaders—to discuss the issue. As a young man, Wilberforce decided his faith would impact what he did with his life. Fighting slavery became one of his main goals.

These friends also shared something else in common: They were all evangelical Christians. Their faith was what motivated them to change things. They weren't satisfied when they knew others were suffering if they thought they had the power to help. They accomplished many things together: sending out missionaries, establishing what we now call Sunday schools, and other efforts to improve society. But they are most known for the abolition of the slave trade.

They also worked to develop and support a colony of freed slaves living in Sierra Leone, Africa. The people of Clapham didn't just involve themselves in problems in their immediate neighborhood; they were willing to help people they'd never met, or people who were very different from them. They were like one family, combining their diverse strengths and unified passion to go after what seemed like impossible projects—attacking difficult ills of society with the tenacity of a fleet of battleships.

That's often how things get done—a group of friends with different talents and a common goal, working together to accomplish something none of them could do alone.

Spend some time thinking and journalling about these questions:

* Is your circle of friends filled mostly with people a lot like you? Why?

* Think about someone you've met recently who is very different from you. Why might that person be interesting to get to know? What could you learn from that person?

* Do you seek out conversations about important issues that impact you or the world, or do you avoid such discussions? How about discussing your faith and how things are going between you and God?

* Have you ever tackled something with a community of people? How was the task made easier by working together? Were there ways that working together made it harder? How?

* Is it possible to have different groups of friends for different purposes in your life? Explain what that looks like.
