2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
A CHANGING RELATIONSHIP: PARENTS BECOMING "COACHES"
Did you play T-ball when you were a little kid? If so, you remember the coach first told you how to hit a T-ball--then showed you how to hit a T-ball. And finally the coach gave you a chance to try it yourself. (Did you ever swing the bat, hit only air, and fall down? Yeah, me, too.)
In baseball a coach starts by putting a ball on a tee, then throws some pitches to a player, and eventually shows the player how to pitch to a batter. Ultimately, a coach can't play baseball for you, but a coach can help you learn how to play. Well, in the game known as "your life," your parents are basically trying to use that same teaching process with you. And when it works the way it's supposed to, the role of a parent is a pretty cool thing. Really!
When you're born, you need someone to do everything for you, right? Parents feed you, burp you, and change your smelly diapers. But the goal of a parent is never to keep doing all that stuff for you. (Good thing, cuz it'd be pretty awkward to have your mom or dad grabbing the TP for you, now wouldn't it?)
The role of a parent is supposed to change over time. Somebody smart once said that parenting is the only relationship in which the ultimate goal is separation. That's because parents are supposed to train their children so one day they can move out and live on their own. And it's not unusual for teenagers to start feeling a desire to pull away from their parents during the middle school years.
Even though parents can sometimes be annoying and embarrassing, remember that they were also in middle school once. It can actually be very valuable to lean into the coaching they give you. Even professional athletes who play at the highest possible level have coaches to help them continue to play better. Their coaches almost always used to play the sport and still recognize how to do it well. Some athletes pay attention to their coaches and improve. Others are puffed up and overconfident and often lose out because they think they're too good for coaching.
As your parents move into this new coaching role with you, here are a couple of tips for you:
1. BE COACHABLE.
Allow your parents to give you advice, partially cuz it can help you deal with the stuff you won't expect.
2. ASK YOUR COACHES GOOD QUESTIONS.
"Why should I do it that way?" "What can I learn from this?" "How did you mess up when you were my age?"
Pay attention to your parent-coaches--because surviving middle school is way more important than learning how to play T-ball.

It's going to be a weekend you will never forget!

SEE YOU AT THE POLE
Will you be joining the thousands of other students world wide, to pray around your flag pole, one hour before school starts this Wednesday?
See You At The Pole is a student led movement designed to move Christian students into unity, to pray for one another, their schools, communities, and world.
Be bold. Pray. Be amazed at what God does.
2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
ONE COMMUNITY: SHARING AMONG BELIEVERS
MEMORY VERSE
"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves." (Romans 12:10)
INTRODUCTION
Growing up in my church, the word "fellowship" meant some sort of post-worship-service gathering that involved food and coffee. And that was about it. It seemed pointless then; but looking back, I can see how important those times were. A church is a family made up of different types of people. And the only way such a diverse group can become a real family--and not just a crowd--is by spending time together.
This week we'll see the members of the early Church giving money to one another, sharing their possessions, and taking care of each other. This is what a real church family is supposed to look like. But how do we get there?
In every church God wants to build something called "community," the sense that we're all connected in a real way. Serving each other, helping, loving, and giving are all ways we express real community.
Believe it or not, this can be the most exciting and life-changing aspect of your church experience. But community isn't easy to come by. It takes a deliberate choice to be a part of the people of God. Once you join, the benefits are endless. This week we're going to look at how to build real community in our own churches.
Day 1
Read Acts 4:32-37
Sharing isn't natural. No one has to teach a child to be selfish with his toys. That trait just comes naturally to him. But it applies to teenagers and adults as well. So how do you figure 3,000 people voluntarily selling their possessions to help other people? When the Spirit of God moves, we discover how the Spirit provides all we need--including a family of parents, brothers, and sisters to help us through life. Recognizing God's provision, Barnabas gladly chose to sell his land to aid the church. Would you be willing to do the same with your stuff? Our culture is selfish; it's time we challenged the status quo by loving each other sacrificially.
Do you believe God will provide all you need--even when you help others?
Do you truly love the people in your church?
What are some ways you can serve the people in your church this week?

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
THE MEASURE OF A FRIEND
So far in this book, we've focused our attention on finding good friends. Remember though, friendships are mutual admiration societies. If we want to find good friends, we have to be good friends.
The quality of a person's friendship is a reflection of his character. Below you'll find a list of questions to help you determine your FQ (Friend Quotient). Give yourself a score between 10 (You da best!) and 0 (You da worst!) for each statement.
FRIEND QUOTIENT SURVEY
___ 1. I don't deal in gossip. I keep juicy things to myself.
___ 2. I'm a good listener. I maintain eye contact, and I ask follow-up questions.
___ 3. I'm even-tempered. I don't explode or withdraw when I am upset.
___ 4. I'm happy--not threatened--when other people succeed.
___ 5. I feel sad when other people fail.
___ 6. I have the confidence and skills to be really honest about things that bother me in a relationship. When I'm honest, the problem is usually resolved.
___ 7. I appreciate it when someone is painfully honest with me. I accept an honest opinion graciously.
___ 8. I take appropriate responsibility for my behavior. I'm neither a blame-thrower nor a blamesponge.
___ 9. One of my strengths is picking the right kinds of friends.
___ 10. I know how to stay away from foolish and wicked people without creating a scene.
What's your total score? The higher the number, the better friend you are. Now ask your best friends to take the test and rank each statement about you. See if they agree with you about your friendship skills. You can also use these questions to evaluate your friends. (I don't recommend showing them their scores, though.)

"...THE MOST CHALLENGING BOOK OUTSIDE OF GOD'S WORD..."
--CHRIS TOMLIN
It's crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe loves you with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts--it's falling in love with God.

Watch Francis Chan's videos about God's crazy love here.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
USING YOUR GIFTS TO HELP OTHERS
We've heard from a pretty reliable source that you're a gifted individual. The Bible makes it clear that God has given all of us special talents and abilities he hopes we'll use to encourage the people around us.
Ask yourself a few questions: "What do I like? What am I good at? What types of things interest me?" Those are probably pretty easy questions for you to answer, but here's a tougher one: "How can I use my gifts, talents, and abilities to help others in my school?" Here's an even tougher question: "Am I willing to do it?"
God didn't gift you so you'd leave those gifts unopened. He didn't gift you so you'd open the gifts and use them just for yourself. The truth is God gave you your gifts with the expectation that you'll use them to make a difference in the world around you. And it just might be that no place needs you to use your gifts more than your school does.
Are you good at math? Maybe you can tutor someone who's struggling.
Are you a good athlete? What if you decided to ask the kid who always gets picked last to be on your team in P.E.?
Are you good at encouraging others? How about finding the new kid or the loner and inviting him to eat lunch with you?
Do other people look up to you? Think what could happen if you rallied a bunch of your classmates and started a new movement. Like a movement to treat substitute teachers with respect or treat others the way you want to be treated or make the janitor's job easier by picking up your own trash.
What if you started a one-person movement? Like a movement to use your God-given gifts, talents, and abilities to make a difference on your campus.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
LIVING OUT LEADERSHIP FOR TODAY
Many of us think we'll make a difference "someday." It seems like we often live for "someday." We think things will be better next semester. Or, it'll be easier when we make it to the next grade. Or, we'll be happier if we just had more money or a nicer house. But I think God wants us to live for him today--not just wait for "someday."
Throughout history God has used kids to accomplish his purposes. Think about David--too young and too small for a job bigger and older men had turned down. Men would have passed him by, but God used him to slay a giant. Or what about Mary? She was just a teenager, but God chose her to be the mother of Jesus. God could have chosen Elizabeth--someone older and more experienced who really wanted to be a mother. Certainly, Elizabeth would have been more qualified by the local gossipers' standards. But Mary was God's choice. And what about the kid with the sack lunch? Instead of having the disciples go fishing or providing food for the massive crowd in another way, Jesus decided to share the lunch of a young boy with a crowd of 5,000.
I think God is still about using kids and proving to the world he is the one who decides the abilities and usefulness of people. Take my friend Leeland--a guy who started writing songs and leading his congregation in worship when he was just a kid. He's being used to lead a whole new generation in getting closer to God through worship and praise. God didn't check Leeland's ID to make sure he was old enough. God used him because Lee was willing, available, and passionate.
So if you're thinking God has to wait for "someday" to use you, think again. God wants to use you right now. You can be a leader in your sphere of influence. You can lead in your school by speaking up when someone's being mistreated, or remaining silent when you're tempted to say something derogatory or hurtful. You can lead by befriending kids who are having a tough time, or not becoming arrogant or creating a clique because of your popularity. You can lead by setting a good example of character and solid morals by abstaining from sex and substances that harm your body. The qualities of a good leader are discernment (knowing when enough is enough), wisdom (applying biblical truth to everyday situations), confidence (not cockiness), and determination (stick-to-itiveness).
The Bible doesn't say you need to be a certain age to be a leader. In fact, 1 Timothy 4:12 says, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity." Pretty amazing that God is saying young people should be the ones who set the example for others. It's important to know also that, as a leader, there is more expected from you. God actually judges leaders more harshly than he judges followers, because they have assumed positions as guides. There might be some junk in your life you need to clean up so you have credibility as a leader. It can help if you have someone older and more mature in your life who can help you deal with those rough spots. If you'll allow this person to be truthful with you about your flaws and weaknesses, and help you encounter God's grace for those areas, you'll grow closer to God in the process. Be willing to learn from those with more experience, so you'll be able to lead others in the right direction.
