2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
No Excuses
"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." (Romans 1:20)
"Yeah, but . . . they didn't know about evolution when Paul wrote this, right? They didn't know about the big bang and Darwin's theory. They didn't have the Discovery channel. If they had, maybe Paul would have written this differently?"
Whatever your take on the dance between the terminology of creation and evolution, Paul's words here stand as God's Word. God is knowable from what He has made. What He has made, in part, is conveniently listed in chapter 1 of His book. Creation reveals Him. Who could create the universe from nothing without endless power? How could any being create the universe good if He were not God?
I've heard all the debates (and I've mangled a few arguments), but the first step to dismissing God is denying the reality of His act of creation. Some people are fine with that. Others want a lesser god. Paul said none of us get a pass for missing the obvious -- that He made it all.
Think: What are some of the things God's creation tells us about Him?
Pray: Thank God for revealing His character by what He has made.
Do: Make another list: Start it with two items -- eternal power and divine nature. Follow those with other of God's qualities that are obvious from His creation.

Heart Tattoos
"These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts." (Deuteronomy 6:6)
Someone getting a tattoo, especially for the first time, will spend months, sometimes years agonizing over what to get, how big to get it, and where to have it inked. And why not? It can be a lifetime decision, right?
Most of us are way less careful about what to put on our hearts. In fact, a lot of us just hold our hearts up in the air, waiting for something or someone to come along to hand it over to. We're ready to cover our hearts with the names of boy/girlfriends, bands, philosophies, sports teams, whatever ignites a little passion.
Solomon warned us to guard our hearts, because we have just the one life. And here, God gives us something worth inking on our hearts: His commands. It's one of the ways we love Him with all of us.
Think: Have you every put something on your heart too easily? Have you ever given your mind, will, and emotions over to something that turned out to be a waste of time (or, worse, really hurtful)? How can you put God's commands on your heart?
Pray: Ask God to help you to put His commands for you on your heart.
Do: Make a quick list of the top 5 things on your heart today.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
Don't Waste Your Life
"For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 1:8)
I remember kind of hating it when I was a student and people would tell me, "You can do anything you want to with your life." It's the kind of statement that sounds empowering to adults, especially those who maybe wish they'd done something else with their lives.
To me, though, it sounded like pressure, like an unfinished sentence with a threat on the end: "You can do anything you want with your life . . . so don't blow it!" Yikes! How was I supposed to know what to do that wouldn't be a huge waste of my one time around the track before heading to heaven?
Peter offers one good answer to that paralyzing question. Whether you become a microbiologist or a sanitation officer or a Hollywood stunt man, here's the key to not wasting your life: Use all that freedom and potential to build into you the 8 qualities we've been talking about this week.
That's the only way you as a Christian can keep from wasting all your potential in Christ. Period.
Think: Do you really believe that growing in these 8 areas is more important than where you go to college or who you marry or what you do for a living? Really? If so, how does that belief play out in your every day choices?
Pray: Ask God to help you not to be ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Do: Write down the 8 qualities from verses 5-7 and put them in your Bible or on your forehead or somewhere that you'll be forced to see and think about them again next week.

This week begins another look at Jesus' time here on earth in the book of Luke. If you haven't joined in with us yet, now is a great time!
2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
Serious Sin
"In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood." (Hebrews 12:4)
We may not admit it out loud, but I think most of us carry around with us a kind of rating scale for sin. We all know the big ones: rape, murder, adultery, etc. But our list of "little" ones is very different: lying to parents, impure thoughts, envy, gossip, arrogance. Eh, everybody does them. Not a big deal. We're all forgiven, right?
It's tough to carry that attitude toward sin (even little ones) too far into Hebrews 12. Today's verse should grab us by the shirt and shake us up a little. It's possible the writer is referring to a resistance against "sinful men" or persecution, but it starts a passage about how seriously God takes sin in the lives of Christians.
One thing it tells me is that I should be struggling against my sin. I don't know how often we do that. The point isn't that we should be perfectly sinless already; we're still growing. The point is that we should be in the fight. We should expect it to be a fight. We should expect the "want" to sin to fight back every time we stand up and say, "No, I'm going the other way."
Then this crazy idea: Whether facing persecution or facing down my own sinful desires, the fight is against sin and it can get bloody. Pain and blood always raise the stakes of a fight. Are we just in the fight against our own sin until it gets inconvenient -- or even when it gets deeply painful?
Think: What's the furthest you've ever gone in standing up against your own desire to sin?
Pray: Ask God to help you come up with braver and bolder strategies for saying no to sin.
Do: Pick a sin or two you struggle with and write down a new battle plan for winning your next encounter with that impulse.

30 Hour Famine
Wow, what a weekend! Between experiencing a memorial service for AIDS victims to hearing from Moses, from destroying blackberries to hearing about God's purpose for us, we had quite the time together.
The final numbers for what we collected are still being tallied. Remember, if you still have donations to turn in, please bring them to Pastor Aaron by next Sunday, March 8. We plan to send them off to World Vision next week so the monies can be put to good use!
We had many great times and got lost of great pictures. You can view the pictures here, save them and even order some to be printed.
May we continue the Famine themes in our lives as we seek to live out God's will every day.

2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART
Too Proud Not to Worry?
"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (1 Peter 5:6-7)
Know any worriers? Some of us earn reputations with our friends and family for always worrying about something. The rest of us just hide it better. Once you get started, it's tough to stop. You'll never run out of good things to worry on -- from fretting over unsightly blemishes and odd-fitting clothes to obsessing over who likes us and who doesn't. We can fill our minds with "what if" thoughts about the worst things happening and "why not me" thoughts about good things happening to others. What triggers your worry instinct?
If you read these two verses together, they seem a little disconnected. They come at the end of a paragraph about humility. Peter writes that humility involves trusting God to meet our needs for significance (being loved, feeling respected, being "stable") in His timing. Then he turns around and tells us to throw (not drop) all of our worry on God, because He likes us.
Of course, the ideas are not disconnected at all. Trusting God with our anxiety is an action of humility. Holding on to worry is an act of great pride. "I can't let go of this thing; I've got to fix it." The problem is that "fixing" is God's job. Humility = trusting the God who loved you enough to give His Son for you and was powerful enough to raise Him from the dead. Pride = holding on to worry because God might not be able to handle your problem as well as you can.
What do we really think about God's love, power, and goodness? The answer has a lot to do with how much time we spend worrying.
