    2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

    I'm a Christian; Now What?

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him." (Colossians 2:6)

The idea in this verse is both simple and profound. In delivering to his readers -- and us -- what we need to know about Jesus, Paul answers the question we often ask: I'm a Christian; now what?

At least, it's the question we should be asking. Instead, I think a lot of us unconsciously think, "I'm a Christian. Now let me get on with my life." Paul will tell us today and tomorrow that God intends that "getting on with your life" be just as much about Jesus as becoming a Christian was in the first place.

My pastor puts it this way: The wedding isn't the end of the relationship; it's only the first day. Becoming a Christian is the start of living in Christ, not just the end of our search for God. If your life isn't all about growing in Christ, it's not all it could be.

Think: Why do you think so many Christians see Jesus as the gate to eternal life but not the path through this one?

Pray: Ask God to help you to live in Christ just as you received Him.

Do: Challenge your youth leader to define what it means to "live in Christ" in 25 words or less.

    2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

    Are You So Dull?

"After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 'Are you so dull?' he asked. 'Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him "unclean"? For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.' (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods 'clean.')" (Mark 7:17-19)

Ouch! I've had moments in my life where I might have imagined that Jesus thought I was pretty thick-headed, but it must have stung a little to hear Him actually say out loud, "Are you so dull?"

Part of the problem was that Jesus' teaching about food not being able to make you unclean was radically different from what the disciples had grown up believing. It was built into their worldview about both God and food. Jesus' declaration that all foods were now clean was so startling they had to ask what, exactly, He meant.

Does Jesus sound too harsh to you, given what seems to us like the disciples' understandable confusion? It might feel that way through the ears of our culture, but Jesus was a teacher, a rabbi, and challenging students with stern questions is often an effective teaching method. It wakes us up, tells us "this is serious," and helps us to realize that we are NOT too dull. We can get this.

Jesus was never NOT loving or patient or kind. Even His harsh-sounding questions were intended for the disciples' good.

Think: Do you ever feel a little dull when it comes to understanding some of the hard-to-get words of Jesus? Does that motivate you to work a little harder to figure them out through prayers, research, or asking someone you trust?

Pray: Ask God to help you to keep growing in your understanding of Jesus' words in the Bible.

Do: Think about Jesus and his disciples next time one of your teachers or coaches asks you a stern or abrupt question.

    Fearful Strangers

"Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear." (1 Peter 1:17)

Have you spent any time in foreign countries? I remember being in Italy once and feeling very "American." After a few days, my wife and I bought some Italian clothes, worked on our accents and a few Italian phrases, and tried to blend in a little. But we couldn't hide; it was obvious we weren't locals.

The day after you became a Christian, you woke up in a foreign country. You might not have felt it, and probably nobody could tell, at first. But your citizenship had been transferred to heaven, the kingdom of light. You had become a stranger here.

Peter wants us to live like we're from somewhere else. He wants us to stop trying to blend in to our worldly culture. He wants us to stand out, trying harder to honor our King back home than the customs of this land. He wants us to remember that the King is watching, and He is a fair judge of our choices.

Think: Do you ever feel like a stranger in your world because of your commitment to God through Jesus? How can that be a good thing?

Pray: Ask God to help you live your life here in reverent fear for Him.

Do: Listen to how the writer of Hebrews 11:13-16 expresses this same idea.

    2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

    First Word

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." (John 1:1-2)

In the first chapter of his book about Jesus, John packs some huge ideas about Jesus into just a few simple sentences. That's good writing. Even those of us who take God's Word as just that don't often give it credit for being well written. God took great care to make sure the words used to communicate His Word were not just meaningful, but also delivered with excellence.

It's no accident, then, that John's first big idea is to call Jesus "the Word." You've probably heard that the original greek word for "word" is logos. That word was known both to Greek philosophy and Jewish theology. It was a perfect word to introduce the idea of Jesus to everyone in John's audience -- on the way to introducing us to the reality of Jesus as the Son of God.

The first thing we learn about this logos is that it's more than just a connection between God and the material world; it is a He. The logos is a person -- a person who has been around since the beginning, a person who has been with God, a person who is God.

Thinking: Have you ever wondered why John called Jesus "the Word" and not "the Picture"? Why do you think God puts such value on words? Why not reveal His truth in video instead of text?

Pray: Ask God to help you get to know Him better by better understanding His Word and all the words in it.

Do: Think about memorizing John 1:1-14 this week.

Two weeks ago we had a contest and asked you to tell us one of your favorite Christian songs and how it's helped you in your journey with God.

The winning entry was from Christine Laughlin!!!! For her willingness to share with us, we've got a free CD of great music from "Rockin' Road Tunes 2009". Thanks for sharing Christine! Here's a snippet of what she had to say:
OK! My favorite song is "God is Watching Over You" by Phil Joel! I love it! Whenever I heard it on the radio I would get up and dance :) Its an amazing song and you should go listen to it right now. Ok so one time I was feeling really sad...and I turned on the radio. The intro of the song came on and I just smiled :) and just started singing to it. When the chorus came on "God is watching over you as always, you are loved what ever you go through, He's right beside you, and if you think He'll ever leave you, you better think again!" It was just perfect!

That's why I love that song.

    2. SOMETHING FOR YOUR HEART

    Can You Have It All?

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money." (Matthew 6:24)

When I was in high school, the adults in my life had a habit of telling me (and every other student), "You can be anything you want to be." They said this as if it were a good thing. Because I lived in a free, prosperous country and had a good education, my life menu had endless options on it.

Here's what they didn't tell me: "You cannot be everything you want to be." We live in a "have it all" culture and "anything we want to be" easily translates itself in our ears to collecting the whole set. We want to use our lives up for God and have a comfortable lifestyle. We want to die to ourselves and look hot. We want to look hot and be pure. We want to change the world and to hang out with the pretty, funny people. We want an iPod. No, the new one.

Here's what Jesus told me: "You can't have it all." Oh. "For starters, will you serve God or money?" Yes! "Nope. Gotta pick one." But I can be anything I want to be! "True. So which will you pick?" All of the above? "Not an option. One or the other."

    Oh.

Think: What do you risk by choosing to serve God instead of money? What do you risk by choosing to serve money instead of God? What are other things you can "serve" besides God or money?

Pray: Ask God to free you from the illusion that you can serve Him and money at the same time.

Do: Make a short list of things Money tells its servants to do.
